LECTOR: Proclaiming the Word of God at Mass:
The mission of the ministry of Music here at the Basilica is to proclaim the good news of the Gospel and inspire and encourage our worshipping community to offer their praise to God through song. From the traditional hymns to songs of contemporary musical settings and lyrics, the music chosen for each liturgy is intended to enhance the message of the scripture readings of the day as well as provide easy to sing melodies that will touch the hearts of the worshippers singing it.
There are a variety of opportunities for those who wish to offer their gift of voice to God and serve the Basilica community. Cantors serve at each Mass, leading the community in joyful praise through song. Our choir serves at the 10:45 Mass, blending their voices in harmonies and accompanying the cantor to enrich the liturgy. The great dome of the Basilica affords a unique acoustical effect in which the music resonates throughout the entire church. The choir provides musical support at the great feasts of Christmas and Easter and at Holy Week liturgies.
Another facet of our music ministry is the weekly concert series. Each Wednesday after the 12:10 Mass, the community is treated to a concert performed by students at the Peabody Institute of Music. Musical artists of various instruments, including the organ, harp, violin and cello, perform a 20-30 minute program of an assortment of styles. This program runs from October until May. This year we hope to expand the program to include a wider variety of artists and instruments. In addition to this concert series, choirs and choral groups from all over the state frequently ask to perform at the Basilica because of its outstanding acoustical capacity and stunning environment. Concerts of this nature will be announced throughout the year in the parish bulletin.
Weddings are frequent joyful affairs at the Basilica and happy couples exchange their vows nearly every weekend of the year in our sanctuary. Our talented soloists are eager to extend their services to provide memorable music for every wedding.
Psalm 100 exhorts us to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord”! The Basilica Music Ministry is committed to assisting each person who offers their praise to God at each Mass to do just that. If you would like to become a member of the choir or minister as a cantor, if you are planning a wedding or want more information about our concert series, please contact the parish office who can then put you in touch with Josh Diaz, the Basilica interim Music Director. And the next time you come to Mass, lift your voice in joyful song – God loves to hear it!
